Dominical Lifeguards S.A.

June Report

In reporting on the month of May we need to include the month of April since the April report was missing from last months issue of DD. As yet undetermined technical difficulties resulted in the loss of that page. Semana Santa was the headliner for the April report with it's extreme conditions and big crowds. Due partly to the new road to Quepos (it is commonly assumed) the numbers were high for both foreign and local 'tourists'. Crowded beaches met head-on with a big swell and stormy weather.

High outflow from the Baru mixed nicely with the incoming powerful groundswell and gifted the surf community with exceptional waves while also burrowing deep and generating immensely strong currents pulling swimmers into the impact zone where they are repeatedly driven to the bottom by a succession of thundering mountains of churning water with a terrific collective force gained from traveling thousands of miles across the south Pacific Ocean constantly increasing in speed and density and power. Reinforcements arrived just in time to meet the extreme situation.

Answering to the request for help published by a growing number of internet sites including the official 'home' site we received and owe many thanks to the individuals who volunteered their time and skills to helping keep our beach safe. First to arrive was Matt Fox, a lifeguard from Ocean City, Maryland and then Adam, a Huntington Beach, California lifeguard appeared who joined local volunteers Pepe and Dylan to create a team of dedicated and capable assistants. They proved up to the challenge. Dominical Beach stayed safe through countless warnings and over twenty rescues and an unwavering attention to duty.

Our lifeguard captain, Andrew and his assistant's Ariel and Jossue wish to express their thanks and gratitude for the generous contributions made at a crucial time. Special Thanks also go to John and Betsy Royster for their generous cash donation which helped put a dent in the still growing debt under which the lifeguard program continues to struggle.
Following Semana Santa, April was a demanding month and so far May continues the trend: big crowds on the weekends and big swells combining to give our crew a constant challenge.

An equal challenge continues with financing the lifeguard program. With the promise of hope for assistance Hotel Roca Verde has extended it's budget over the $5000 mark for the first time. thanks go to Jen for her generous offer of two weeks ago: being t he sole lunch provider for the lifeguards for 4 days each week (Monday-Thursday). Thanks also go to Mike and Starla at 'The Refuge' for taking on Saturday lunches and to 'El Coco' restaurant for supplying lunches on Friday. Sunday lunches continue to come from Roca Verde.

Other lifeguard news is the proliferation of internet awareness of the presence and needs of the Dominical Lifeguard program. There is currently only one official site: There is currently one known fraudulent site: Go to the official site for a listing of related sites and links and for details of the fraudulent site. As always donations can be made directly to:

www.domincallifeguards.org has the only official 'PayPal' payment option for the Dominical Lifeguards S.A..

Banco Citibank de Costa Rica San Isidro de El General: Account #117-105-122-142823-1-5

Checks and cash can be delivered anytime to Roca Verde or Jazzy's.

Another potential fund raising approach has recently been offered by the staff at Land Assurance. Initiated by Rosario Woodruff the idea is to make a formal request of the Mayor for some form of government assistance. Tim and Rosario crafted a letter which they delivered to the Mayor and plan to follow up with a more detailed letter as well as a petition containing signature's of concerned citizens.
