Nosara, COSTA RICA May 24, 2010 – In the penultimate date of the Circuito Nacional de Surf DayStar 2009-2010, Jason Torres of Jaco conquered the gold in the Torneo Britt Iced 4-star contest this past weekend and added 1,500 points to his ranking tally. Surfing in the waves of Guiones the national runner-up killed it in the finals from the beginning and with this is now solidly in the fight for the National Title coming up in the Gran Finals in June.

 

The waves were at 2 meters, and breaking perfect from around 10 a.m., with the tide backed down, and the wind was good, and it was at this  moment that the finals on Sunday blazed before 800 people who came out for the Torneo Britt Iced’s second day. Torres’ heat also featured Carlos Muñoz of Esterillos, Gilbert Brown of Puerto Viejo—who made it to the podium for the second time this year—and Antony Seguro of Esterillos.

 

As is the custom of Torres, he began strong, this time with a right where he took advantage of each section. The judges gave him a 7.17. Hardly 2 minutes later, he would return to the starting place of that right, and obtain something unique—a tube in 1.5 meters which he opted in with depth and length going left until that wave opened to him so he could put in two more maneuvers which showed his load of motivation. The judges gave the verdict of 8.57 for a total combination of 15.74, his highest score of the event, and one that Torres’ opponents had little chance of surpassing in the remaining 15 minutes.

 

“The truth is I did not have faith in that tube; I did not think that I was going to leave it clean. I saw the exit and thanks to the fact that I brought speed, I managed to make it outside. Soon the wave opened to me and I did not think twice to beat it more and to make good points,” said Torres after the finals.

 

The best attempts to reach Torres came when Brown put 6.33 on the scoreboard, and then finished the series with another wave of 6.27. Nevertheless, Jason forced his remaining competitors to surpass a total of 15.74, requiring at least a 9 point wave to beat him. That’s something Muñoz and Seguro never managed. Practically floating the remaining ¾ of the finals, Jason left the water before the heat even finished.

 

“When I participate, it’s because I set out to win and for that reason right now I am happy. Nevertheless, the Championship was never my first priority. But now, I am going to the Gran Finals in Playa Hermosa and try to be the National Champion. Luis (Vindas) is strong, but I will give everything to it,” Torres added.

 

With the inclusion of Jason Torres and Carlos Muñoz in this weekend’s finals, they are now both in a position to put pressure on Luis Vindas, the ranking leader who left Nosara with a bad result. The best combination of the date was the work of Jason in the end and the best wave of Muñoz was 9.33 after completing an Ollie Up and a Superman, maneuvers that would give him the second highest points of the season as a competitor. Matias Braun of Montezuma took 1st place in a previous date.

 

 

The Caribbean surfer Nataly Bernold won in Guiones and with this it returns the tension for  the title that now will now be defined in Playa Hermosa. In 2 meter waves that Lisbeth Vindas usually dominates, it became the news of this event that Bernold added her second victory over Lisbeth at a Circuito Nacional de Surf date this year. It will now come down to Bernold winning Vindas in the Gran Finals in Playa Hermosa, if possible, to get the title.

 

“I trained a lot in this type of wave before this date because I knew it was going to be great and that was what gave me the security to win this date. That was my goal,” expressed Nataly.

 

Clever Anthony Fillingim of Malpais won the Junior series this weekend, beating an inspired Carlos Muñoz who came in 2nd place. Both Anthony and Carlos are both in the running for the National Junior Championship and it will all come down to who wins in the Gran Finals in Playa Hermosa.

 

The Gran Finals date of the Circuito Nacional de Surf DayStar 2009-2010 will take place at La Curva on June 25, 26, and 27.

Jason Torres ganó el Torneo Britt Iced y se mete a la lucha por el título

En su primer oro de la temporada 2010 – 2011, Jason Torres conquistó el Torneo Britt Iced con validez  4 Estrellas o 1.500 puntos al ganador por categoría. En las olas de Playa Guiones de Nosara en Guanacaste el sub-campeón nacional mató la final desde el inicio y con esto se incluye a la lucha por el Título Nacional en junio próximo.

Bajaron las olas a 2 metros de altura, quebrando perfecto después de las 10 a.m. cuando la marea retrocedía y con buen viento, en el momento justo para que las finales de esta penúltima fecha del Circuito DayStar, empezaran a prender fuego ante unas 800 personas que se dieron cita en este segundo día.

A la final más esperada del evento llegaron los mejores dos de este segundo día, Carlos Muñoz y Jason Torres, al lado de Gilbert Brown que consigue el podio por segunda vez en el año, y la primera de su carrera para el de Esterillos Anthony Segura.

Sonó el cornetazo de inicio para la final, y como es costumbre de Jason, no se hizo esperar y se dejó venir en una derecha en el minuto uno que trajo hasta la orilla, donde aprovechó cada sección. El jurado le pagó con 7.17 esa ola y empezó mandando el heat.

Apenas 2 minutos más tarde, Jason regresaría al punto de salida de la derecha que le depararía el gane, y esta vez logró algo no visto hace mucho en una final Open: un tubo de 1.5 metros caracterizado por la profundidad y la longitud, del que salió y la ola le abrió aun más para meterle dos maniobras más que iban cargadas de motivación.

El jurado ya más que enterado del nivel que trajo Jason a Nosara, dio su veredicto y le entregó 8.57 para una combinación total de 15.74, la más alta del evento que significó una dura tarea para sus oponentes de superar, aun que tuvieran más de 15 minutos para superarla.

“La verdad no le tuve fe a ese tubo, me metí, pero no pensé que iba a salir de ahí limpio. Vi la puerta de salida y gracias a que traía velocidad logré estar a fuera, luego la ola me abrió y no lo pensé dos veces para pegarle más y hacer un buen puntaje”, dijo Jason sobre su ola más alta de la final.

Los mejores intentos para alcanzar a Torres fueron de Gilbert Brown que metió 6.33 y a diez minutos para que acabara la serie un 6.27; sin embargo, a Gilbert, Jason lo obligó a sumar una ola de más de 9 puntos; a Muñoz y a Segura, combinación de 15.75. 

Prácticamente Jason solo flotó las tres cuartas partes restantes de la serie, nunca marcó, y esperó a que sus rivales le propusieran mejorar aun más el 15.75, pero eso nunca pasó y con esto Jason saldría de la final antes que terminara.

“Yo cuando participo es porque me propongo ganar y por eso estoy feliz; sin embargo, nunca fue mi prioridad este Campeonato, pero ahora voy con todo a la final en Playa Hermosa a intentar ser Campeón Nacional. Luis está fuerte, pero lo daremos todo”, añadió.

Con la inclusión de Jason y Carlos Muñoz en la final, ahora son los dos que meten presión a Luis Vindas quién salió de Nosara con un mal resultado, pero que ya tenía sus mejores tres previo a esta fecha.

La mejor combinación de la fecha fue obra de Jason en la final y la mejor ola de Carlos Muñoz con 9.33 después de completar, en una  misma ola, un “ollie up” y el “superman air walk”, maniobras que le darían el segundo puntaje más alto de la temporada realizado por un competidor. El primero fue obra de Matías Braun en la cita pasada.

Ganó en Guiones la caribeña Nataly Bernold y con esto vuelve la tensión del título que ahora se definirá en Playa Hermosa en la última ronda del evento final.

Nataly explotó su surfing con el compromiso de ganar en olas que Lisbeth suele dominar (2 metros y más), y se hizo de este evento 4 estrellas con lo que suma su segunda victoria y ahora deberá superar a Lisbeth más de una posición en la serie final de Hermosa de la Open Femenino.

“Entrené mucho este tipo de ola antes de esta fecha porque sabía que iba a estar grande, y eso fue lo que me dio seguridad para ganar esta fecha. Esa era mi meta”, expresó Nataly.

Y en Junior, la astucia fue para Anthony Fillingim que ganó la mejor serie de su carrera a un inspirado Carlos Muñoz que quedó segundo. Anthony, y Carlos son ahora los dos que corren en la carrera por el título.

La siguiente fecha del Circuito se muda a Playa Hermosa para la sétima y última cita de la temporada, la Copa DayStar, en el punto conocido como “La Curva”, los días 25, 26 y 27 de Junio próximo.
