Torneo Witch’s Rock ‘perfilará’ primeros contendientes al Título Nacional

Los jacoeños Jair Pérez y Luis Vindas son hasta hoy los más fuertes contendientes en el Circuito DayStar tras adjudicarse las citas de Jacó y Palo Seco respectivamente, más que fueron finalistas en Westaflia. Un título que se entrega al surfista con las cuatro mejores fechas -de siete- se dirige a su cuarta parada donde se ‘perfilarán’ los primeros corredores(as) a lucha por el Campeonato Nacional.                                                   

Este próximo fin de semana en Playa Tamarindo, se correrá el Torneo Witch’s Rock, correspondiente a la cuarta fecha del Circuito Nacional de Surf DayStar (CNS) los días sábado 13 y domingo 14, de categoría 4 Estrellas ó 1.500 puntos al ganador(a) por división.

Frente a las instalaciones del Witch’s Rock Surf Camp,  en Tamarindo, se viene una de las fechas más antiguas del CNS y al que asistirá una cantidad importante de surfistas  locales de gran nivel, más la congregación de los mejores del país que arribarán a una playa que espera olas de 1.5 metros pero con viento a favor, según el reporte de www.wetsand.com.

En la categoría Open, es el dotado surfista Luis Vindas quien ha cosechado lo mejor en las primeras tres fechas de categoría 4 Estrellas (1º y 3º lugar) quién hoy está en su máximo nivel y que va en busca de su primer título nacional en esta división, al igual que Jair Pérez (1º y 4º) que también no ha sido Campeón Open.           

Sin embargo, se viene la segunda parte de los eventos 4 Estrellas (Gran final será de 5), donde la historia puede cambiar drásticamente en caso que los dos más fuertes hasta el momento, no logren su tercera mejor fecha antes de la Final de Playa Hermosa, cual es la cita que da en definitiva, el puntaje más alto de la temporada para todos.

Confirmada está la participación del primer Campeón Nacional de Costa Rica, Federico Pilurzu, quien vuelve a la competencia después de casi 7 meses, que correrá en casa por primera vez en la temporada y que aseguró que estará en las restantes fechas del Circuito DayStar en Santa Teresa, Nosara y Playa Hermosa. 

Pilurzu, quien estuvo ausente de la competencia después de jugar el mejor papel en la historia de un Open por Italia en un Mundial de Surf con el puesto 17º, llega a un Circuito que aun abre  la oportunidad  de luchar por el título; no obstante, aseguró que esta no será su prioridad, sino el fogueo. 

El año pasado, el ítalo-costarricense  tenía más oportunidad aun al título que Carlos Muñoz previo a la Gran Final; sin embargo, se ausentó a la cita debido a su prioridad Internacional en el WQS.

“Tengo claro que las cuatro mejores fechas puntuadas dan el Título Nacional, pero no voy pensando en eso, sino en hacer buenos papeles. Claro que voy a competir en mi casa (Tamarindo) y sí estaré en lo que resta del Circuito en un momento que mi surfing está muy bien”, dijo Pilurzu.

Por otra parte, la presión hoy es para el Campeón Open, sub 18 y sub 16, Carlos Muñoz, quien no se ha conectado con su surf en la competencia  y la defensa de los títulos le es cada vez más difícil; sin embargo, el de Esterillos se ha dado a conocer por su aceleración en rectas finales.

“A veces siento que tengo que dar más la talla y me presiono mucho, pero trato de tranquilizarme lo más posible, poner mi mejor surf en cada heat y tratar de dar lo mejor de mí”, comentó Muñoz, quien este año combina la defensa de sus tres títulos con un apretado calendario internacional.

En el que representa uno de los mejores años de su carrera, la racha de victorias Lisbeth tratará de ampliarla a cuatro, hecho que la acercaría un poco más a su octavo título nacional, siempre y cuando, no le permita a Nataly Benold dejarse una fecha. La caribeña cuenta tres segundos lugares consecutivos.

En esta fase de eventos 4 Estrellas, Lisbeth ya logró lo mejor a cuenta personal con tres ganes; sin embargo, ahora  tratará de restarle posibilidades a su contrincantes de pelearle el título en Playa Hermosa, principalmente en las últimas instancias. Sus principales amenazas son Bernold, Jordan Hundley y Mariana Samudio.

“Me siento muy bien por empezar con el pie derecho el Circuito, pero sé que esto va apenas por la mitad y uno no sabe lo que pueda pasar. Mis deseos de ser Campeona Nacional una vez más son fuertes y para eso voy a luchar”, comentó la defensora del título.

Y finalmente en Junior, el mejor hasta el momento es Maykol Torres, quien pegó fuerte en las dos primeras fechas, pero que se quedó en semifinales en la tercera parada que coronó el Campeón Muñoz. Jordan Hernández de Puerto Viejo, suma su tercer segundo lugar consecutivo.

Las inscripciones del evento se realizarán en Witch’s Rock Surf Camp el viernes 12  a partir de las 5:00 p.m. y hasta las 7:00 p.m. por un costo de 12.000 colones para las categorías mayores  y 8.000 para menores de 16 años; el costo de la membresía es de 15.000 colones. La competencia inicia el sábado a partir de las 7:30 a.m. hasta las 4:00 p.m. al igual que el día domingo.

TO PLAYA TAMARINDO THIS WEEKEND FOR TORNEO WITCH’S ROCK

INTERNATIONAL PRO AND TAMARINDO LOCAL FEDERICO PILURZU CONFIRMS PARTICIPATION HERE AS WELL AS SANTA TERESA, NOSARA AND PLAYA HERMOSA

Playa Westfalia, COSTA RICA March 10, 2010 – Until now, Jaco’s Jair Pérez and Luis Vindas have been the strongest contenders in the Circuito Nacional de Surf DayStar 2009-2010 (CNS), judging by their 1st place appointments in Jaco and Palo Seco, respectively—even more so than the winner of last month’s Westfala date in Limon, Ramón Taliani. With this weekend’s date in Tamarindo on Saturday March 13 and Sunday March 14, the Torneo Witch’s Rock brings the 4th opportunity out of 7 for the best of the best to fight for the National championship. Winners of this 4-Star contest will be awarded 1,500 points in each división.

In front of the facilities of Witch’s Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo, comes one of the most established dates of the CNS, and with it brings a large amount of high-calibre local surfers, in addition to those who will travel from other parts of the country. This weekend waves are expected to be approximately 1.5 meters but with tailwind, according to www.wetsand.com.

In the Open category, spectators will see surfer Vindas, who has reaped the best in the first three dates—a 1st and a 3rd place—and with it the highest amount of ranking points toward the National title in this division. He is followed by Pérez with a 1st place and a 4th place, and slightly less points. However, Torneo Witch’s Rock, as well as the followup dates in St. Teresa and Nosara are 4-Star events, and keeping in mind the Gran Finals in Playa Hermosa—a 5-star contest—history can drastically change all along the way. The best 4 dates determine the National champion.

Making things very interesting for all the surfers is the confirmed participation of Tamarindo’s own Federico Pilurzu, who was the first National Champion of Costa Rica, has two Central American Surf Championships, and a lot of international surf experience. He returns to National competition after almost 7 months. Pilurzu has informed the Federacion de Surf de Costa Rica that he will be competing for the rest of the Circuito Nacional de Surf DayStar including Santa Teresa, Nosara and Playa Hermosa. Last year, Pilurzu was close to the National title in ranking points, but opted out of the Gran Finals for a World Qualifying Series (WQS) date instead.

“I know clearly that the four best dates earn the National title, but I am not thinking about that, instead I’m thinking about playing good roles. I am clear that I am going to compete in my homebreak, and yes, I will be at the Circuito for the rest of them while my surfing is good,” said Pilurzu.

On the other hand, there is pressure this weekend for the current Open, Junior and Boys champion, Carlos Muñoz, who had missed a couple of Circuito dates, instead surfing in Hawaii for his sponsor, Volcom. The defense of his titles is difficult for him coming back just last month for the 3rd date.  

“Sometimes I feel that I must give more and I pressure myself a lot, but the best treatment is to calm down the best way possible, which will help me surf better in each heat and I will give the best of myself,” commented Muñoz.

Lisbeth Vindas of Jaco is at a stronger moment than most competing in the Circuito Nacional de Surf DayStar 2009-2010. She represents one of the best of this race, with 3 1st place victories, and she will try to extend that to 4 all the while going for her 8th  National title. To do that, she will have to prevent Jaco’s Nataly Bernold from winning in Tamarindo, her former home. Bernold has had 3 consecutive 2nd place finishes.

In this phase of 4-star events, Lisbeth has already obtained the best possible points out of the 3 contests. Regardless, she will want to reduce any possibilities of anyone else such as Bernold, Jordan Hundley or Mariana Samudio from coming from behind, even as late as the 5-star Playa Hermosa date.

“I feel great that I have begun the Circuito on the right foot, but I know that this is hardly halfway and one does not know what will happen. My desire to be National champion is once again strong and I am going to fight for it,” commented the defender of the title.

And finally, in Juniors, the best surfer of the moment is Maykol Torres of Esterillos, who bested them all in the first 2 dates, but remained in the semifinals in the third showdown where Muñoz was crowned champion. Jordan Hernandez of Limon, scored his third consecutive 2nd place.

The inscriptions for Torneo Witch’s Rock will take place at Witch’s Rock Surf Camp on Friday, March 12, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and cost 12,000 colones for the major categories and 8,000 for the categories for those 16 years and under. The cost of membership is 15,000 colones.

The competition begins Saturday and Sunday from 7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
