CARLOS MUNOZ SETS LATIN AMERICAN RECORD AT WORLD JUNIOR SURFING GAMES ECUADOR

Six days into the International Surfing Association World Junior Surfing Games (WJSG) Ecuador 2009, where he’s been competing in both the Under 18 and Under 16 categories of the contest, Carlos Muñoz—the best Junior surfer of Costa Rica—now knows that his #1 responsibility is to finish up the Under 16 division at the top. 

Today, in Round 4 of the main event of the Under 16, Muñoz advanced as the 1st place leader of his Heat into the semifinals, a position never before obtained by a Spanish speaker in the World Junior Surfing Games. The surfer from Esterillos is assured at least a 9th place finish in the ranking in this division, surpassing the Hispanic 10th place mark obtained by the Chilean Manuel Selman in the World Junior Surfing Games Tahiti 2004.

For his part, Muñoz has dominated this division as few competitors in any of the countries have done in Ecuador, the Tico leading in the last four Rounds with 1st place wins. Today, Muñoz entered the quarterfinals with his countryman Jordan Hernandez of Limon.

They opposed Brazil’s Mateus Navarro and Caio Ibelli for a series that gambled high in 20 minutes at Podium 2. Muñoz reached his high combination of 15.17 before 15 minutes, then yielded waves to Hernandez, who did not find two high scoring waves and ended in repercharge. There, Hernandez fell to last place and out of the Games.

“The conditions today were very hard, and it hurts me that Jordan remained behind because we have both been surfing very well in this category. I believe that I have been improving. I have not been able to give everything that I have to give, but I certainly can improve and give more to Costa Rica,” expressed Muñoz when coming out of the Under 16 Heat.

In his Under 18 repercharge Heat today, Muñoz could not advance and was out in Round 6. Also today, Anthony Fillingam of Malpais left the competition with a 3rd place finish in his Under 16 repercharge Heat. 

With that, the only Tico left in the World Junior Surfing Games is Muñoz. Tomorrow, on the seventh day of competition in Ecuador, of the 28 countries that attended, only nine have surfers still alive in the event: Australia, Brazil, Hawaii, France, New Zealand, South Africa, United States, Tahiti, Peru, and Costa Rica.

Tomorrow, Muñoz will run the semifinal in the Under 16 against the Hawaiian Kaimania Jaquias and the Brazilian Jesse Méndez.

Carlos Muñoz impone record Hispanoamericano en el Mundial de Surf

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 April, 2009 : - - Salinas, Ecuador -- La responsabilidad número uno del mejor surfista Junior de Costa Rica es cumplir en la sub 16 y dar lo máximo en la sub 18 en Ecuador. Hoy entró al agua la cuarta ronda del evento principal en sub 16 donde Carlos Muñoz avanzó como líder de su heat hasta las semifinales, hecho nunca logrado por un hispanohablante en este mundial.

El de Esterillos aseguró al menos una novena posición en el ranking de la categoría de menos edad, superando la marca hispana que el chileno Manuel Selman impuso en Tahití 2004 con la décimo primera posición.  Sin embargo, Muñoz ha dominado esta división como pocos competidores de todas partes del mundo lo han hecho en Ecuador, el tico en las cuatro rondas que clasificó, lo hizo como líder en cada uno de sus series.

Hoy Muñoz entró a los cuartos de final con su paisano Jordan Hernández, donde contrariaron a los brasileños Mateo Navarro y Caio Ibelli, serie cual se predecía iba a tener mucha marcación debido a los importantes puntos que se jugaron en 20 minutos en el pódium 2.

A Muñoz le alcanzó su alta combinación de 15,17 lograda antes de 15 minutos, para ceder olas a Hernández que no empezó puntuando alto con sus dos primeras olas que corrió, pero el limonense no pudo esta vez de backside y se fue al repechaje, donde también cayó en el último heat de los ticos en el sexto día.

“Las condiciones hoy fueron muy duras, me duele que Jordan se quedara porque habíamos venido surfeando muy bien en esta categoría. Creo que he ido mejorando, no he podido dar todo lo que tengo, pero estoy seguro que puedo mejorar y dar más a Costa Rica”, expresó Muñoz a la salida de serie en sub 16.

En sub 18 no pudo hoy en repechaje y quedó fuera en la ronda 6, lo que le dio una décimo quinta posición del mundo  entre más de 100 competidores. Así, y debido que Anthony Fillingin abandonó hoy la competencia con la tercera posición de su heat en repechaje, es Carlos Muñoz la única carta tica en juego y única de habla hispana.

Hacia el sétimo día de competencia en Ecuador, de los 28 países que se presentaron, solo nueve  mantienen surfistas con vida en el evento: Australia, Brasil, Hawai, Francia, Nueva Zelanda, Sudáfrica, Estados Unidos, Tahití, Perú, y Costa Rica.

Mañana Carlos Muñoz correrá la semifinal en sub 16 contra el hawaiano Kaimania Jaquias y el brasileño Jesse Méndez.
