¡Enorme!: Noe Mar McGonagle Campeón Latinoamericano del Quiksilver King Of The Groms

El líder de la generación sub 15 en Costa Rica volvió a hacer de las suyas en el extranjero. El residente de Playa Pavones de Golfito, Noe Mar McGonagle, se consagró Campeón Latinoamericano durante la final del Quiksilver King Of The Groms (KOTG) que se corrió ayer en Mazatlán, México.
Tras esta gran actuación, Noe Mar ganó el pase a la final mundial de Francia que se llevará a cabo en octubre próximo, a donde acudirán 46 competidores provenientes de 21 países donde se llevaron a cabo estas clasificatorias. A Latinoamérica se le abrió una sola plaza, la cual será representada por el tico.
Ayer Noe Mar no solo venció en las tres rondas que lo hicieron campeón, sino que arrasó en el evento tras combinar más alto que sus contrarios en el camino hacia la serie final. Lo mejor del tico estuvo en su primera serie, cuando metió 16.67 –de 20 posibles- frente a los 9.83 del local Mario Fernández.
Una ronda más adelante, en la semifinal, quintuplicó el puntaje de su contrario, Marco Alvares de El Salvador, 14.17 contra los 2.17 del cuscatleco que no tuvo suerte en la serie y con esto el tico se fue a la gran final que se encontraría al talento venezolano, Derek Gómez de 16 años.
En formato “Man to Man” (dos surfistas por serie), el pase a Francia lo disputaron los dos últimos hispano hablantes en competencia, Gómez y McGonagle, serie en la que el tico se impuso con su score más bajo durante el evento: 11.76 frente a los 7.36 del venezolano que fueron rivales en la marea y condiciones más difíciles.
“Todos los rivales eran fuertes, pero lo más fueron las condiciones de la competencia, gracias a Dios logré pasar los heats para llegar a la final y en lo personal creo que Derek (Gómez) y Aurelio Preto de Ecuador sobresalieron mucho”, dijo Noe Mar.
Noe Mar se encontró en la final del KOTG con una ola izquierda, muy similar donde entrena a diario en su casa Pavones, una de las olas con más potencial en Costa Rica, lugar de donde hoy sale el campeón costarricense más joven que se haya consagrado en el extranjero.
Aun así que su rival en la final, el venezolano Gómez llevara una leve ventaja gracias a su postura en la tabla que lo ponía en esta ola izquierda de frente para atacar (a Noe Mar de espaldas), pudo sacar su mejor técnica e impresionar a los jueces con su “button turn” (maniobra base del surf), más explosiones de agua brillantes, consecuencia de la lectura que aplicó.
“La ola me benefició mucho porque vivo frente a una ola de izquierda que es Pavones; sin embargo, las condiciones estuvieron muy difíciles, olas pequeñas, mucho viento y muy inconsistentes”, añadió.
Con este gane, Noe Mar se ratifica como la mejor carta costarricenses que logró consagrarse campeón fuera de casa con menos edad: en 2010, Campeón Centroamericano sub 18 con 14 años, dos veces ganador en una parada sub 16 del circuito estadounidense y hoy Campeón Latinoamericano sub 17 con 15 años.
Los otros dos surfistas por Costa Rica que lograron ser campeones en el extranjero con menos de 18 años fueron: Jason Torres, Campeón Panamericano sub 18 con 17 años de edad en Perú 2005. En 2009, Carlos Muñoz Campeón Centroamericano sub 18 con 16 años (El Salvador) y VQS sub 18 con 17 años en 2010 (California).
En octubre, Noe Mar enfrentará a los mejores sub 17 del mundo en un torneo único que Quiksilver fabricó para realizarse previo a la octava parada del tour mundial élite, en Francia del 4 al 13.
Esta oportunidad se pondrá entre las mejores que ha tenido un tico para enseñarse a nivel internacional.
“Cada torneo es una ayuda en mi carrera y mucho más cuando estás compitiendo con los mejores de cada país. Igual tengo que enfocarme y entrenar muy duro para ir bien preparo a Francia que es a nivel mundial”, concluyó.
Por su parte, el tico dedicó este gane a su familia, a su entrenador Diego Naranjo, a Calos Muñoz que también lo acompañó y a sus patrocinadores: Hurley, Etnies, Oakley, Crsurf.com y tablas Patterson.

The leader of the under 15 generation of Costa Rican surfers has returned from abroad. The resident of Pavones de Golfito, Noe Mar McGonagle, was consecrated the Latin American champion during the final of the Quiksilver King of the Groms than ran yesterday in Mazatlan, Mexico.

Mar Noe found in the final KOTG a left wave, much like where he trains daily at home at Pavones, one of the best potential waves in Costa Rica, a place from where he today is the youngest Costa Rica surf champion to win outside of his country.
Yet his final opponent, Venezuelan Gómez took a slight advantage thanks to his position in the lineup that put him first in the wave to attack (with Noe Mar second in priority). Noe Mar was able to get the best technical moves and impress the judges with his "bottom turn" (basic surfing maneuver), and with more explosions of bright water, a result of applying what he had learned.
"The wave benefited me a lot because I live in front of a left breaking wave that is Pavones. However, there were very difficult conditions, small waves, high winds and very inconsistent," he added.
With the win, Noe Mar is ratified as the best Costa Rican surfer to take a title, away from home, at an earlier age: in 2010, American Champion U-18 to 14 years, twice a winner at a Under 16 surf contest stop in the U.S., and Latin American Champion today, with an under 17 win at age 15.
The other two surfers from Costa Rica who managed to become champions abroad while under 18 years old were: Jason Torres, Pan American Champion U-18 with 17 years of age in Peru in 2005. And In 2009, American Champion at 16 years old, Carlos Muñoz under 18 champ in El Salvador and under 18 VQS winner at 17 years old in 2010 in California.
In October, Noe Mar faces the best in the world under-17 tournament Quiksilver set to go off prior to the eighth stop of the elite world tour in France from the 4th to the 13th.
This opportunity will be among the best ever training in international competition for a Costa Rican surfer.
