Costa Rica Surf Report and Forecast for October 2010

By: Greg Gordon –

Caribbean Coast – Anticipating an active hurricane season farther north in the Caribbean Sea, I expect a few head high waves to show up in one or two day pulses each week of the month. Past that there isn’t much to hope for until the beginning of December.
Pacific Coast – There will be waves all month, but it’s a matter of is it going to be blown out. Generally yes, but this is when you wake up at 5 a.m. and hit a perfectly peeling point with no one else out. Just avoid getting struck by lightning, por favor. The first ten days of the month will be smaller, head high to overhead, but then from the 11th to the 18th there’s going to be a week of waves. Then it drops again until the 24th or 25th when a macker of a Southwest shows up. Those will be the best days of the month.
New moon – October 7th   Full Moon – October 22nd

What better excuse to visit Costa Rica this month then to see a concert! Limp Bizkit will be at the Autódromo La Guacima in Alajuela on October 14th at 6 p.m. And then Green Day plays on October 29th at the Ricardo Saprissa Stadium in Tibás. For either show, it’s worth spending a night in San Jose. To find tickets or a safe place to stay, send an email to:
Best flights: October is the cheapest month to fly for free. However, December and January are two of the most expensive, so buy your winter vacation tickets TODAY !!
Best deals: This month every surf camp and hotel has a deal to help fill their rooms. The key is knowing where is safe, comfortable, and near a good surf spot for your level of surfing. That is why you should ask the experts, licensed and insured travel agents in Florida. And while now there are spaces, by early November the best spots are sold out for the holidays. So fill out a request form to start your reservations:

Costa Rica claimed their first top 10 finish at the ISA Master World Championships held in Santa Catalina, Panama, from August 27th to September 1st. Craig ‘Tequila’ Schieber took 5th place in his Kahuna division, too.
Three big contests take place this month, two in Costa Rica. The first is the Sol Pro Surf on the 9th and 10th in Manuel Antonio with $5,000 in prizes hosted by the Federacion de Surf and Lime Coral. And the second is on the 30th in Dominical, hosted by SoCosta Surf Trips. In between the national Costa Rica squad heads to Peru for the World Surfing Games from the 19th to the 27th.
Gilbert Brown is staying busy these days, opening up a new Caribbean Restaurant near Clarita’s in Jaco, and getting his own section produced and posted on Taylor Steele’s online project Even though Gilbert did not make the top 10, he got lots of props from Surfing Magazine, where they reposted his killer clip. Here’s the quick link:
In many beachside communities in Costa Rica, there are no lifeguards protecting the beach. If there are, they are both underpaid and overworked. But programs like in Tamarindo, Nosara, Playa Cocles, Esterillos, and Dominical hire local surfers and train them to become lifesavers. They have become role models for the smaller kids and are becoming respected because they are getting certified to international standards. Our travel company donates $200 each year ($100 for each Dominical and Tamarindo). You can help these individuals, too, by making a donation through
