COSTA RICA SURF REPORT

Playa Negra

FORECAST

Caribbean Coast: This month marks the beginning of the wave season, with a better chance of swell towards the end of the month. Swell direction is predominantly from the east, as nor’easters pushing off the U.S. Coast send groundswell under the Lesser Antilles and into the Caribbean Sea.

Pacific Coast: The Southern Pacific is already cooling down, so the first part of the month will be smaller, in the chest- to head-high range for the first two weeks. The third week looks to bring one last southwest swell to push it back up to two feet overhead, but following a few days of bliss it will return to the fun chest- to head- range. Also, I expect the heavy rains to end early in the month, leaving a lot of sunshine for extended sessions with offshore winds.

New moon: November 7
Full moon: November 21

TRAVEL

CR Surf Travel Co. is already getting requests for SUV rentals for the high season. This is a reminder that if you want to plan a Costa Rica trip over the holidays, now is the time to make your reservations. Don’t forget there’s big and less-crowded surf over on the Caribbean side and we know where to stay in Puerto Viejo and Cocles. Email us to help plan your customized vacation: travel@crsurf.com

CONTESTS

Costa Rica fielded a talented group to represent at the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games, held October 19-27 in Peru. Carlos Munoz finished with the highest result in the Open Division with an equal 16th, and all team members advanced through some heats.

Also in October was the final stop of the Triple Crown Series, held in Manuel Antonio on the 9th and 10th. Jair Perez won $2,000 in the Open Division, Lisbeth Vindas won the Women’s group, and Anthony Fillingim took 1st in Juniors. All three won a custom PIKO surfboard.

ENVIRONMENT/COMMUNITY

Shark finning is the act of slicing off the fin and discarding the living shark back to sea, where it dies a horrible death. The amputated fins are then exported to Asia, where they are used to make an ominous delicacy: shark fin soup (or as journalist John Platt calls it, “extinction in a bowl”). Shark finning is responsible for the deaths of some 200 million sharks each year — contributing to a 90% decline in global shark populations — and many finning operations are taking place on the private docks in Puntarenas. If you want to help stop this practice, make a donation to Pretoma, www.pretoma.org, who are leading the fight in Costa Rica to educate the public on this issue.
