Costa Rica Surf Report and Forecast for February 2013

By: Greg Gordon – www.crsurf.com

FORECAST

Caribbean Coast – This month is the most consistent for waves, with the smallest days still waist to chest and the biggest up to three times overhead. The best swells appear about eight days after a Northeaster moves off the coast of the United States, with the low pressure center about equal to North Carolina.

Pacific Coast – Another quiet start in the South Pacific with little inspiration for waves over head high until the 10th, when a mediocre Southwest swell arrives. Not much else in the SPAC so it will be the Northern Pacific that will produce any meaningful swell. A few head high sets arrive on the 2nd from the WNW with more to come on the 9th and again on the 19th. With the Papagayo offshore winds in full effect, the water temp will drop due to upwelling so bring a spring suit if get cold easily, especially anywhere Nosara and north.

New moon – February 10th Full Moon – February 25th

On the national surf circuit, the next date will be in Jaco on February 23rd and 24th. They are now showing these contests live thanks to WipeOut Films and you can catch them on http://www.surfingcr.net.

There is a new Triple Crown circuit starting on the Nicoya Peninsula with stops in Ostional, Playa Garza, and Playa Guiones. The second stop at Playa Garza takes place on February 9th and the finals on March 2nd (waves permitting).

CRsurf.com is proud to announce that we will again be sponsoring our team riders from Pavones, Noe Mar and Leilani McGonagle. Last year they earned 1st place in Junior Mens and Junior Womens respectively while also participating in beach cleanups and other community service projects.

ENVIRONMENT

Safari Surf School in Nosara has created an Indiegogo campaign to raise money for the installation of a bio-diesel production system that is closed-loop (zero waste), energy independent (off-grid), and carbon-negative. As part of their sustainable surf tourism vision they also offer Surf Credits that you can purchase and that money goes to a local non-profit while at the same time giving surfers equal ‘credit’ for products and services.
COMMUNITY

The Dominical Lifeguards have saved hundreds of lives over the past ten years, but due to a lack of government funding and lower than expected tourism revenue are having trouble keeping the guards on the stands. To help them there will be a surf contest in Playa Hermosa de Uvita on February 23rd, with over $1000 in cash and prizes for Open, Junior, and Longboard categories.

Waves Costa Rica in Tamarindo have partnered with CEPIA to teach kids to surf and providing training for them should they want to compete. The goal is for children to lead a healthy and active lifestyle away from drugs and crime. Their next fundraiser is a sunset SUP paddle on March 23rd sponsored by Roxy.
