Central America and Mainland Mexico Short-Range Surf Forecast (Report Date: 2/17/2017)

EASTING SSW AND SOME NEW NW OVER THE WEEKEND

Kind of an uneventful forecast for you today. SSW (195-205) from earlier in the week will slowly back off through the weekend and early next week. Some new NW (295-305+) swell is due to make its way down through Mainland Mexico over the weekend and into Central America early next week, peaking for areas like Costa Rica next Tuesday/Wednesday. Smaller background southern hemi fills in mid to late next week.

SSW (190-205) that arrived Tuesday will slowly fade through the weekend and early next week. Some small reinforcements should help maintain at least some knee to chest high+ waves along the exposed coast through Monday, with some bigger waves today and Saturday morning.

More long-period NW energy arrives Saturday in areas like Puerto Vallarta. Periods should be in the 18 to 19 second range, with swell heights building into the 7 to 9 foot range during the peak Sunday/Monday. Most of that size will be confined to a few more exposed areas farther north. The rest of Central Mexico and Central America will see smaller swell in the 3 foot range as the swell fills into a peak early to mid-next week. Wave heights are going to range anywhere from overhead to double overhead+ for the most exposed sp0ts in northern-Central Mexico to waist to head high along the better exposed spots of Central America.

There isn’t going to be much else going on though. Small reinforcing southern hemi swell from the SSW (205-215) arrives Wednesday/Thursday and will help maintain a couple feet of background swell, but otherwise smaller knee to chest high surf at southerly exposures through most of next week.

Tropical Outlook

No tropical cyclones at this time.

There has been plenty of fun sized NW swell in the water these days combined with glassy morning conditions. This week the NW will continue through the entire week with small size keeping in the fun range. There will be some good but small SW in combination with the NW. Breaks that enjoy the combo swell should get into the head high and head high plus range. Far out late next week a new burst of solid SW will enter in and bring those SW facing breaks into the well over head range.

Winds have been calm the last weeks. By early mid morning it has been onshore everyday. This trend will continue through the weekend. By early next week some stronger and more consistent offshore flow will carry us through the week. The farther south you go the earlier the onshore will start. Some breaks like Avellanas and further north may stay offshore through the week.

Check out Salvemonos.org. Buy a souvenir T, sticker or mug at Luna Llena hotel or Azul Profundo Boutique. All proceeds go directly to our beloved monkeys. Thanks and be safe!

Tamarindo still have good waves, the northern winds are on pause now, that means that South winds come over in the afternoons, mid morning sessions at the river mouth are rewarding, but the best break away from the schools is Pico Grande, 2-3ft solid, glassy and long rides, one or two barrels here and there.

Avellanas also has plenty of good waves all over its breaks, remain crowded due the time of the year, when every one fromt he North Hemisphere run away from cold weather.
