Breakdown:

Caribbean Coast - New hope for the right coast with a short period (8-9 second) ENE swell bringing overhead surf early next week. Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning look best, with a slow fade down to chest high by Thursday.

Pacific Coast - More SSW swell appears Sunday morning with a 20-second period and waves growing from head high at best to 1-2 feet overhead by sundown. This swell has a lot of south so some Nicoya breaks may not catch it as big.

The Long Shot - More swell arrives on the 19th with more South angle, pushing up the surf to 2-3 feet overhead and this won't fade below overhead for the following four days.

* The forecast is made using over 14 years of wave model and report analysis, but can't be accurate 100% of the time. To do your own, use our links.

Playa Grande

Hotel Las Tortugas

Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas

5/10 - Thursday morning was head high, off-shore, and beautiful. The crowd was light.

It should stay the same for the next few days with the morning and afternoon high tides. Of course anything can happen during this time of the year, so we'll see. Check out our Facebook page.

Tamarindo

Rafa at
Witchs Rock Surf Camp - Tamarindo

5/9 - Unfortunately, the wind turned onshore early on today, wreaking havoc on any swell that managed to pump through into Tamarindo.

As luck would have it, the wind stayed throughout the afternoon and into the evening, leaving the ocean and what could have been some fun, shreddable waves, bumpy and crummy.

For more pictures check out Rafasand.com!

Let’s hope for clear skies and better conditions for tomorrow! Or…put that beer down and get some shut-eye for that dawn patrol.

Playa Guiones

Nosara Shack

Graham at Nosara Shack

5/9 - Surf conditions are good today. The crowd factor is average. Yesterday evening session was really fun, but with lots of water. Chest to head on the sets and clean til wind turned. Looks like we should keep size into next week and towards next weekend we should have something big coming in.

We take pride in photography and we hope it shows. We have lots of prints and art for sale in the store by each photographer. Senior photographer Alfredo Barquero is our local TIco photographer and we’ve watched him develop into an incredible artist. he was able to purchase his own equipment this season and is now 100% non dependent on anyone else to make a living. Book a private session HERE.

5/8 - Nice Job Andrea, I have heard good things about the event! Surf here is big enough but strange bump mixed in with good swell. Weather is changing for sure and I see the summer surf crew arriving daily here in Jaco, Hermosa, Esterillos area . Tides are getting better for the afternoon beachbreak sessions and after we get past the huge moon we should get into some greats sessions, weekend is going to be JACO JACO JACO, Count on it, size will hold up some and Jaco has some of the longest rolling waves in the area when the tides are as they will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday ! Surf Shop and Surf School owners , we are planning a mini SURF –EXPO here in Jaco to show you all the new products and boards we will be distributing for late 2012-2013, at the same time we will be offering prebook specials on the new stuff as well . Rumor has it Rob Machado and The Hurley team are in town and will be in person at Backyard's Saturday Surf Series. This is not to be missed! Dominical

Steve at Jazzys River House

Jazzys River House - Dominical

5/9 - An outgoing tide this morning under clearing skies produced some georgeous head high sets with strong offshore breezes and almost no crowds. Largely closed out but some perfect peelers popped up here and there and even a few almond barrels passed through. Conditions diminished as the tide dropped and the wind shifted so mid day was uninspired. Light rains occasionally spiced up the late afternoon incoming tide session and some classic waves pulled through and still the crowds were thin. Still peaky, a bit crunchy but mostly clean and strangely uncrowded.

The Point had some fun, clean, smaller days this past week, a bit crowded at times but mostly mellow. Dominicalito was full of surprises with some unusually good conditions. Jazzy's RiverHouse and the rest of Dominical are full of discounts and offerings galore, it's the beginning of our lean, green, let's make a deal season.

Pavones

Colin at Una Ola Surf Trips

Una Ola Surf Trips - Pavones

5/8 - Waist to shoulder high + waves with fair to good shape. (3-5ft) The swell dropped a bunch overnight. The sets were more consistent in the morning, but soon after they got fewer and further between. The wind was calm and glassy most of the day. The point was still looking really fun, but compared to yesterday, it’s quite lackluster. Click to see today's pics.
