TIDES for May 1st, 2020

MONTH VIEW

High Tide: 7.26 feet at 8:51 a.m.
Low Tide: 1.75 feet at 2:53 p.m.

Full Moon - May 7th

National Forecast

5/1 to 5/7 FRI SAT SUN MON TUE WED THU
Caribbean 3-4 ft. 2-3 ft. 3-4 ft. 3-4 ft. 2-3 ft. 3-4 ft. 3-4 ft.
North Pacific 3-4 ft. 2-4 ft. 2-3 ft. 2-3 ft. 3-4 ft. 3-5 ft. 3-5 ft.
South Pacific 3-5 ft. 3-4 ft. 2-4 ft. 2-4 ft. 3-5 ft. 3-5 ft. 3-5 ft.

Overview:

Caribbean - No major swells this week, it is ENE swell (3.5 to 4.5 ft at 8 seconds) which means waist high surf with an occasional chest high set. It will be less consistent over the weekend, but it won't be flat all through next week.

Pacific -  There are combo SSW and SW swells in the water, but neither are that big (1.5 ft at 13 seconds and 2.5 ft at 12 seconds) so that means chest to head high waves Friday and then dropping a foot through the weekend. A new batch of combo swells arrive Tuesday that push it back up to head high with overhead sets (2.5 ft. at 16 seconds). The next BIG swell comes on the 10th from the Southwest (5 ft. at 15 seconds) = 2-3 feet overhead if the forecast sticks.

REMINDER - The beaches of Costa Rica are currently closed for ALL activities, including surfing. Please respect the laws until the ban is lifted.

AREA REPORTS

Northern Nicoya Peninsula

Playa Grande

Hotel Las Tortugas

Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas - 4/28 - The weather patterns are holding with perfect off-shores and conditions in the morning.  The surf is jumping up and down at mostly an ideal size and we are painfully enjoying watching the seemingly majestic ocean pump hours of perfect unridden barrels through the breaks.  They are trying to open the beaches now to regulated activities.

Tamarindo

Alejandro at Seafari Costa Rica - 4/28 - This week's art pledge is from wood artist Mainor, which most of you living in the Tamarindo/Langosta area have seen carrying a log or a piece of wood around. The biggest donor on our GoFundMe will receive this special collection.

Mainor has a special talent, he sees shapes in wood, and brings the natural beauty trapped in the dead wood he finds and gives it a second life by polishing with a steel brush and carving it with a knife.

I've been in Tamarindo for 5 years now, and I've personally started a personal collection of his art. I'm proud to support a local artist, who works extremely hard to live an extremely simple life.

Mainor is a regular patron of our Tamarindo (Sergio's) kitchen. Without tourism, he's struggling to sell his art in the streets. I told him about our program and he immediately wanted to help, by donating the best pieces he had in his outdoors gallery. I got him a pint of varnish and a brush so he could perfect his pieces, and asked Fanny Stövander to kindly take pictures of the pledges he donates.

The biggest donor this week (ends Saturday, May 2nd, 11:59pm, Costa Rica Time) will receive this collection, a great touch to give a second life to your home. Notice how one of the pieces would make an amazing base for a table lamp, and others will add a pura vida touch to your living room, kitchen or hallway!

South Nicoya Peninsula

Santa Teresa

Caribbean surf forecastSurf Forecast.com - 4/30 - 3 feet at 12 seconds from the South means chest to head high waves, dropping down to waist to chest for the weekend. The next swell arrives Tuesday from the SW and by Wednesday will be overhead. This should continue to increase through the rest of next week.

Jaco / Playa Hermosa

Playa Hermosa

Christina at Surf Inn Hermosa - 4/29 - South swell  3-4ft+ waist high – beautiful waves this morning    BEACHES CONTINUE TO BE CLOSED – Costa Rica has extended closed borders via land, air & sea – to foreigners and non – residents until May 15th and this is expected to be extended – stay tuned for more notice.    For those in the country on a tourist visa – extension has been granted to July 17th.  Sitting, waiting, wishing, praying for the world.

Now offering Surf & Fitness Packages: Surfing, stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), yoga, Crossfit , healthy food & plenty of good times included! More information.

Southern Pacific

Dominical

Steve at Jazzys River House - 4/29 - Higher tide session this morning we had 3'-4' mellow, clean surf with a strong offshore breeze.  Consistent good shape under a partly cloudy blue sky.  Playa Hermosa South and Dominicalito smaller but same overall conditions.  Too small for the Point.

Probably due to the quarantine making Dominical somewhat a 'ghost' town we are seeing wildlife that we haven't ever seen before.  First time ever for white-faced (Capuchin) monkeys to be seen in town as well as Kinkajous and Dwarf Porcupines.  A pleasant side benefit to the lockdown.  Beaches will remain closed indefinitely.  Dominical's natural food store 'Mama Toucan's' is sponsoring a local 'Food & Funds' campaign for needy families delivering food, clothing and household items.

Caribbean

Salsa Brava

Caribbean surf forecastSurf Forecast.com - 4/30 - ENE swell 4 feet at 8 seconds means waist high surf with a few chest high sets. Swell is expected to drop a foot for the weekend and then come back to waist to chest high for next week.
