Surfing is incredible on both the Pacific and Atlantic sides of Costa Rica. However, that is far from the only enjoyable activity you can engage in while visiting this beautiful country. Hiking is another popular way to see much of what the country has to offer. From the misty slopes of Monteverde to the waterfalls and hidden beaches of Manuel Antonio, there are many beautiful places to hike in Costa Rica. Having the right equipment can make the difference between an enjoyable trek and a miserable outing.

Prioritize Weight and Size During Selection

If you plan to hike overnight or even to just hike for a full day, you need to have the right equipment. However, you don’t want to wind up exhausting yourself by carrying too much. A heavy pack is a common first time hiking mistake. So is breaking in a pair of hiking boots on the trail.

Weight is one of the most crucial considerations when it comes to carrying everything you need on your back. In other words, you want to prioritize lightweight items as much as possible. Carrying a water filter, for example, is preferable to carrying multiple gallons of water. Most common equipment required for successful hiking comes in lightweight variants. Everything from axes to sleeping bags has light versions that are perfect for both first-time and experienced hikers.

The size of items matters as well. You will not want to carry anything in your hands when you hike, other than perhaps a walking stick. Everything needs to fit into or securely on the outside of the pack that you wear while hiking.

Focus on Items You Really Need

Looking carefully at what you actually need is important. For example, hiking the jungle trails close to the eastern shore by the Panama border will require excellent insect repellent, waterproof hiking boots, and special containers so that monkeys can’t smell the food you have. Hiking in the cloud forest will require layers of warm, wicking clothing, as well as a towel. Make sure that the supplies you carry with you while you hike reflect the environments you are going into, as well as the duration of your stay. You don’t need to carry a tent with you if you’re coming back to your hotel the same day.

Hiking in Costa Rica can be a beautiful, life-changing experience. There are few places on Earth with such dramatic and gorgeous vistas as Costa Rica. From the arid regions in Guanacaste to the tropical regions farther south, there is definitely a climate and hiking trail perfect for the adventure you want to have.
