I met Jair when he was just a grom surfing in the Boys Division of the Circuito Nacional in Costa Rica. I surfed with his brother Tingi in Cocoa Beach, and saw the talent that both had on a surfboard. Surfing mostly in Playa Hermosa, he grew up in Playa Jaco, and has been surfing these respected breaks for the past 19 years.

Jair claimed his first Costa Rica National Surf Title when he was 15 and has captured titles in multiple categories. In 2010 he won the Junior Pro Category in the East Coast Surfing Championships and made it to the Semifinals in the Pro Division. Jair still competes on the World Qualifying Series. And just this year he won the Open title in the Circuito Nacional.

Why is he a hero to me? Because he is the hardest working contest surfer I’ve met. He is the underdog, and yet always makes the finals. And he cares about his community. He is a great representative for Jaco and Costa Rica surfing.

Jairo is an amazing person and a true role model for any young surfer who wants to follow their dreams and believes that through surfing that they can truly change the lives of others. I am proud to be his friend to him and his family. God has a special trophy ready for him in his Kingdom. You can only hope that your surfing trails lead you to have a chance to meet someone as kind and as humble as Jairo. He is the definition of Pura Vida.
