Driving a rental car in Costa Rica? The Costa Rican Traffic Law requires foreign drivers to carry the following original documents: a valid passport and a valid driver’s license. Travelers can drive in Costa Rica with a valid foreign license for the duration of their three-month tourist visa. However, if travelers are only carrying a copy of their passport when they are stopped, it will be left to the discretion of the traffic official whether to accept the copy as sufficient proof that the driver has a valid visa.
