Costa Rica Surf Report: November 2011
Costa Rica Surf Report and Forecast for March 2012

By: Greg Gordon –

Caribbean Coast – This month is one of the most consistent, with swells from the NNE to the East plowing on to the reef and sandy beach breaks, which stay mostly empty. Less than perfect road conditions keep the masses away, and the locals mostly surf either Salsa Brava, Playa Cocles, or Cahuita. Conditions are usually best right at sun up and sundown when winds are lighter.

Pacific Coast – The next major SSW swell arrives on the 13th, and gives the left coast a big wet kiss of a swell, pushing waves overhead for Valentine’s Day. It’s followed quickly by a swath of WNW swell keeping the Guanacaste Coast filled with head high plus surf. Then more South swell arrives the third week so combined with constant offshores, it should be great. Bring a spring suit or 2mil top if you go north since upwelling will cool the ocean temperature.

Full moon – February 7th New Moon – February 21st

Found some tickets on JetBlue from Orlando to San Jose for $353, and they offer the lowest fees for bringing boards ($50 each way). This is a great month for concerts in Costa Rica. Elton John plays on the 3rd, Chilean reggae group Gondwana plays on the 17th, and Grateful Dead’s Bill Kreutzmann plays along with Allman Brother’s Oteil Burbridge at Docelunas Hotel in Jaco from the 17th to the 19th.

If you are coming to Costa Rica to surf, then why not leave your camera at home and hire a local surf photographer or videographer? On our photos page, we list over 15 professionals that charge a fair price to capture you in the barrel or your kids catching their first waves. Don’t stress about carrying expensive equipment, and go home with the best memories given to you on a CD. Lensmen (and women) can be found in Playa Hermosa, Tamarindo, Santa Teresa, Nosara, Puerto Viejo, and can easily reached by email or cell phone.

Who doesn’t love monkeys? It really is sad to hear when one of them gets electrocuted while crossing a powerline. So to save them is the group Salve Monos – Stop by Luna Llena Hotel or Azul Profundo Boutique in Tamarindo and buy a souvenir T, sticker, or mug. The money raised goes towards constructing rope bridges across the roads so monkeys can cross safely and not have to use the electrical lines.

Please take this time to consider what joy surfing has brought you and how you can help keep your playground clean. We proudly support PRETOMA (, the Dominical Lifeguards (, Surfrider Foundation (, Save the Waves (, and 1% for the Planet ( Success won’t be measured in dollars raised but in what we can accomplish, protecting our oceans and beaches from pollution, and helping to save marine life for the next generation of surfers to appreciate them.

On January 3rd, CR Surf sent the Dominical Lifeguards a $100 donation to help with the program. We will continue to raise money for an AED (Automated Electronic Defibrillator), and hopefully can earn enough to put one in capaple hands not only in Dominical, but Tamarindo, Nosara, and Playa Cocles. Visit to find out more about the program.
