Costa Rica Surf Report and Forecast for July 2012
Costa Rica Surf Report and Forecast for February 2013

By Greg Gordon

Caribbean Coast: Expect consistent surf this month, with the smaller days waist- to chest-high and the average swell size a foot overhead for the first few days of the year. A larger ENE swell fills in by the 8th, pushing in 2-3 foot overhead surf, and then after, a four-day lull another short period surge will push in back overhead again. Overall a great month to surf, but expect a drive delay as they are doing work on the highway to Limon.

Pacific Coast: The North Pacific is cranking up some juice in January, but it will be a lot smaller by the time it reaches the Guanacaste Coast. Head-high to overhead surf by the 7th from the WNW. More coming a week later, with a combo SSW arriving by the 15th. Then, one more Southwest arriving by the 25th.

Once again, CR Surf Travel Company has donated $250 to the Costa Rica environmental group — PRETOMA, to help them protect sea turtles and the beaches they nest on. This is only part of our 1% For The Planet pledge, along with giving over $2,500 this year to sponsor local surfers and surf contests in Costa Rica and Cocoa Beach. We are also the first travel company to be registered as a Benefit Corporation, requiring sustainable practices in every aspect of our business.

If you surf or just love the beach, then 2013 should be the year that you should help protect them. Even if it is just ONE THING! If you smoke cigarettes, that one thing is not throwing your butts in the street or the sand. It could be using less plastic bags either by shopping with a canvas bag or just buying your veggies fresh. Or it could be joining Surfrider to protect the last remaining reefs in central Brevard. With each little step, we as a community make strides towards a cleaner coast.’ We don’t know how climate change will affect our coasts in the long term, but in the short term, there is a lot we can do to improve our surroundings and our quality of life — not just for us, but for future generations.
