I don’t make that claim lightly. I’ve stayed in at least a dozen places around Juan Santamaria airport outside of San Jose, and all of them have their perks. When I am looking for a place to stay near the airport I want a good location, a comfortable and quiet room, a good value, and a decent restaurant. Often I am arriving at a time when I just don’t feel like going out to find somewhere to eat, and I am only staying a night before driving off to either the Caribbean or Pacific coast.
The Adventure Inn does have it all. It starts with location. I don’t want to stay right next to the airport since the planes taking off and landing make a lot of noise, and I would rather be a few minutes away where it is much quieter. However, I don’t want to be too close to San Jose where traffic can delay my arrival to the airport or cost me $15 to take a taxi. The Adventure Inn is located in Belen, a short eight minute drive to a quiet part of town and once you are in room, you don’t hear any road noise.
The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The mattresses are firm but not like bricks. The pillows are fluffy and plentiful, not those pillow that feel stuffed with cotton balls. They have great water pressure for the shower, thick soft towels, and the room comes with a coffee maker, a small fridge, all the amenities need to make my stay cozy. On the property there is a small gym, an office center, a large shaded pool area, and a small shop for any after hours drinks and snacks.
My favorite part of the hotel is the restaurant, open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. They pour you a welcome drink when you arrive, prepared by their friendly bartender. Their menu is varied, from seafood to pasta to typical Costa Rica dishes. And the breakfast that comes included with your room is one of the best in San Jose. They have a full table of fruits, cookies, and pastries, and then I get to select from a list of my favorite fare – pancakes, omelets, gallo pinto, granola and yogurt, or eggs any way I want.
They have 24-hour security and a safe parking lot for my car rental. Transportation to and from the airport is free. And if I have to leave super early for a flight, they will even prepare a bagged breakfast for me to pick up at the front desk when I check out. And the prices are very reasonable, below $100 in the rainy season, and around $140 in the high season, based on double occupancy. They offer a 10% discount if you pay cash, and another 10% discount if you put in the code ‘CRSURF’ when making your reservation online.
