ENVIRONMENT / COMMUNITY

This is the Environmental Advice I Would Offer in Every Surf Lesson

The Save the Waves Film Festival features short movies created to highlight the joy of surfing and how important it is to protect surf breaks around the world. They are posting new videos each week.

These Groups are Helping Families in Costa Rica Get Food - UPDATED to include Cahuita - Even if you cannot make it to Costa Rica to visit, you can still assist the communities who make it such a friendly place.

Bodhi Surf School in Uvita has put out a COOKBOOK of their favorite local recipes. Download one today and support a surf school that gives back to their community and protects the environment. (A $20 donation is suggested - LINK)

Community Carbon Trees is working to replicate their sustainable reforestation using fairly paid labor to the Amazon Rainforest which is suffering from deliberate fires set by farmers and ranchers. AREA REPORTS

Northern Nicoya Peninsula

Playa Grande

Hotel Las Tortugas

Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas - 5/22 - The beach should be open by the end of May for at least a part of the day in the morning.  Our guys have been going down the beach to Tamarindo or over to Avellanes which are open.  The swell has been good, but a tropical wave is heading our way now, and the off shore wind patterns could get tricky.  There is also the possibility of rain and lightning.  Watching perfect unridden surf has been a majestic experience.  We hope to be fully back in action in July and are hoping to continue our good fortune as a virus free area.

Tamarindo

Alejandro at Seafari Costa Rica - 5/22 - The opening of most beaches on weekdays in Costa Rica was effective from May18th to the 31st, when the government will announce the new steps to follow by our communities.

Neptune has been merciful with all surfers on the pacific coast, outgoing tide during the beach opening times (5am to 8am), very different conditions along the week; from glassy, fast, heavy and hollow waves on the sand bars to stormy mornings with choppy peaks all over, anyhow we all had the most positive spirit to paddle out with the first day light, enjoy the warm north breeze and being out and in the water. Average 2-3ft early in the week and slowing down towards the weekend.

Avellanas  river mouth and little hawaii has been EPIC 3-4ft solid waves, mid low tides worked the best for these point breaks, luring plenty of people, but there were waves for all if you were patient.

With the current circumstances we all appreciate everything everybody has being doing to help and assist the most affected families, in the country. If you have the possibility to donate, these are few links to different Foundations/ONG that operates in Guanacaste and/or along the country:

At Seafari CR we are updating all procedures and the way we used to operate, learning from world wide feedback and forums, the main concern is to stay on top every single day we are with you  having fun in the water or exploring a national park.
Sending the most positive thoughts to all and yours, stay mentally and strong and look up for the opportunity to bring out your best skills to make this a better world.

South Nicoya Peninsula

Santa Teresa

Caribbean surf forecastSurf Forecast.com - 5/22 - Dropping surf, from chest to head high down to waist to chest by Sunday. Then a new swell arrives late Tuesday pushing in 1-2 feet overhead waves from the SSW (3 feet at 18 seconds).

Jaco / Playa Hermosa

Jaco

WOW Surf Shop JacoChuck at Wow Surf Shop in Jaco - 5/21 - I was in town yesterday a.m., surf was really good and improving as the morning went on, but yes everyone got out of the water at 8 am and politely got in their cars and did their socially responsible thing! I met with a couple clients who made appointments and had a chance to do my thing in the shop, wish we could get back quickly to the high point we had back in February but here’s looking forward to things to come!

I am more than happy to do virtual board shows and show you the newest of the new including the Hypto Krypto Step Up for pumping waves! Just got them in stock but only a couple. Send me an email at chuck@wowsurf.com to ask for info on boards and other inventory or just to say hello! Pray for our friends in Nicaragua ok, it’s getting ugly there and the government is. Or helping its people ( as usual ) thanks Happy Surfing !!

Playa Hermosa

Southern Pacific

Dominical

Steve at Jazzys River House - 5/21 - 5am - 8am we are free to slip under the yellow tape and hit the water! Two months of just looking at the beach from a distance.  The surf has been good for the past two days, 4'-5' dumping barrels at morning low tide, fast and fairly clean with some near perfect in and out tubes with of course big crowds who've been waiting impatiently since mid-March.  Allotted only three hours per day means the beaches are packed - open all day would allow people to come and go and not bunch up but the theory is this short early morning opening keeps it to locals only.  Low tide is nice for swimmers and families with kids but next week with early morning high tides will be a different story with no sandy beach for runners and beach walkers.  Luckily we've had sunny mornings so it's back to the beach for fun in the sun...as limited as it may be for now.  We'll take it!

Caribbean

Salsa Brava

Caribbean surf forecastSurf Forecast.com - 5/22 - Mostly waist high surf for the weekend and through the start of next week. A small bump is expected Tuesday but by Thursday it drops to knee high for the end of the week.
