Currently the country is seeing an increase in Covid-19 cases in the San Jose metro area, and therefore the government has issued an orange alert. That means increased driving restrictions all week and a mandatory mask wearing order for all government and commercial employees.
Costa Rica plans to open their borders on August 1st, but not all foreigners will be allowed to enter. As soon as the government publishes a list we will post it on the site and Facebook pages.

CONTESTS and SURFING NEWS
We will repost the surf competition events as soon as the country re-opens their beaches.
Our friend and expert surf instructor Andrea Diaz was arrested last week for peacefully protesting beach closures in Costa Rica. She was not charged with a crime, but her legal fees are still thousands of dollars so a GoFundMe page has been created to help. Please consider donating. Any extra will help her family with food and necessities until the borders re-open.
ENVIRONMENT / COMMUNITY
Jaco Impact is hosting a beach cleanup, starting at Restaurante El Point at 8 a.m. Check their Facebook page for details. Bring your mask and a bottle of water, bags and gloves will be provided.
Another beach cleanup is taking place in Santa Teresa on Friday starting at the lifeguard tower in front of Banana Beach at 8 a.m.
A petition has been started to get Costa Rica to permanently ban oil drilling off both coasts. Dozens of environmental non-profits are supporting this effort. Check SueltenLaLey.com to sign!

AREA REPORTS
Northern Nicoya Peninsula
Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas - 7/15 - The beach is officially open every day in the morning (til 9:30 a.m.) for the light off-shore light off-shore wind and the head high sets. As the tides move into the afternoon this week the situation will get trickier for the currently ecstatic locals, especially if it gets any bigger and starts closing out at the lower tides.
Alejandro at Seafari Costa Rica - 7/15 - Amazed by the morning colors blended and reflected on the clouds and the ocean, glass water surface and clear visibility let us watch the jacks, sting rays and some needlefish passing underneath while we wait for waves... There is a lack of swell energy, besides that the 1-2ft waves in the morning sessions are really fun to play with, fairly crowded sand bars and point breaks, but we all can only surf at the same time. No wind in the morning and perhaps some Veranillo is around, cloudy afternoons are the cherry for sunset pictures.

Esterillos
Esterillos Oeste Surf Report - 7/14 - This mornings waves were fun longboard waves only 1-2 ft but very clean and glassy making for some long reforms on the reef toward the estuary. It seemed even smaller and barely rideable looks like tomorrow is going to be very small again and best bet for a little more size is going to be Esterillos Este or Bejuco.
Looking like Thursday might have a little more energy but with being low tide in the morning Este and bejuco probably a little better conditions. Most of the businesses in town are open the allowed time but the community is planning a festival to welcome back visitors once the restrictions have eased up.
Southern Pacific
Quepos/Manuel Antonio
Luis at Manuel Antonio Surf School - 7/15 - With a little bit of clouds for today. The conditions for surf are good, with the high tide at 10:15 am and the low tide at 4:40pm. We have a wave height of 1m during the day. The wind will be from 2kp to 6kp today. Also same conditions Dominicalito is having today and like always, the best time to surf there is in the high tide.
Steve at Jazzys River House - 7/15 - Stormy weather is becoming an old story but it's still with us trashing the surf and keeping locals indoors. Between storms however we've had some nice sunny days and some windows of excellent conditions. Mostly mornings with some head high sets at higher tides. When it's good it's good and fair sized crowds have jumped at the chance to take advantage of the peaky, speedy waves on nice days. Beaches now open 5am to 9:30 am all week.
Caribbean
Cedric at Zalty Boyz - 7/15 - Today I went looking for waves all over and the best place to surf was Playa Cocles. It was 4 to 5 feet glassy. At Cocles the sand bars are a little shallow so it makes the waves really fast and closing out for past couple of weeks. The best place to surf this weekend I think will be Playa Grande. It is a little ways from town and some times gets a little less crowded than other waves. It is forecasted to be like 5 and half foot with a good direction, the waves in Grande are generaly a lot more longer then Cocles. Local news is that it is probably a good idea to rent a bike to get around because you're only allowed to drive a car once a week, and everywhere is pretty close to ride around on a bike.
