PIC OF THE WEEK: Crocodiles in the lineup? This guy was only looking for a snack. Lucky for him, surfers don't bite back. Instead he was moved to a surfer-free zone.  PHOTO: Costa Ballena Lifeguards

National Forecast

10/16 to 10/22 WED THU FRI SAT SUN MON TUE
Caribbean 1-2 ft. 1-2 ft. 1 ft. 1 ft.  1 ft. 1 ft. 1 ft.
North Pacific 3-5 ft. 2-4 ft. 2-4 ft. 2-4 ft. 2-4 ft. 3-5 ft. 2-4 ft.
South Pacific 3-4 ft. 2-3 ft. 2-4 ft. 2-4 ft. 3-4 ft. 3-5 ft. 2-4 ft.

Overview:

Caribbean - Maybe a few longboard waves for Wednesday but after that it is Pancake-ville with nothing showing on the horizon for the next week.

Pacific - So the only real swell in the water maxes at 2.1 feet at 16 seconds on Wednesday and then fades to 1.5 ft. at 14 seconds from the SSW. This means the sets will be head high, but they get more inconsistent through the week. Monday has a new SSW arriving (2.6 ft at 16 seconds from 210 degrees) but that angle means some blockage so less overhead sets, and which also fades for the rest of next week. Because of multiple West and SSW shorter period swell, expect jumbled lumpy peaks, too.

AREA REPORTS

Northern Nicoya Peninsula

Playa Grande

Hotel Las Tortugas

Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas - 10/13 - The small surf has occasionally been pretty good as the winds shift around during sunny mornings and rain showers in the afternoon.  People have been catching the main peaks with hardly anyone out for hours at the time depending on how good it is.  The morning surf should start later in the week and should begin getting very interesting as we move toward the dry season without any major weather disturbances.

Tamarindo

Alejandro at Seafari Costa Rica - 10/14 - Under the influence of a tropical low pressure sistem, the rain is constant for about 36 hours already, making wave conditions mushy and murky, a very short period of time and mixed combo south swell energy is the strom's effect. Not recommended to swim or surf on the inside breaks near the river mouth, among several health issues also the inconvenient of strong currents and possibly crocodiles in the ocean after being drifted from the estuary. That applies to any river mouth along the coast. As it is stormy all along the pacific coast, in Nicoya surf is not so good.

Jaco

WOW Surf Shop JacoChuck at Wow Surf Shop in Jaco - 10/14 - Hey From Playa Jaco Well it’s been wet for sure, mean stubborn low sitting right out front so 48 hours of rain now but waves are small fun if now we are starting to see some logs and stuff. Water color is turning red with clay runoffs and stickier wax is flying out the door! Still got same deals going on boards in stock but only another week or so and then new boards on the rack and store wide discounts end! Get your while the gettin' is good! Thanks ~ Chuck and the Crew at WOW SURF !

Southern Pacific

Dominical

Steve at Jazzys River House - 10/14 - Clean, glassy, nearly perfect head high peaks this morning!  Occasional barrels - both directions.  Close to perfect conditions under a solid grey sky.  Offshore winds were a big help and oddly enough there were only a handful of surfers out.  Maybe the croc in the lineup yesterday had some people worried.  Dominicalito and Playa Hermosa South were smaller and not so peaky but still improved over recent storm conditions.  Too small for Punta Dominical.

Hotel Roca Verde is still hosting live music on Friday nights with Ken Nickell and Nancy providing the tunes.  Music starts at 6:30 so come early for a tasty meal and an evening of music and dance.

Check www.jazzysriverhouse.com for specials and discounts or visit Ruby-Kim in her fine arts studio/gallery and ask about her popular class which she calls 'Palm Part Art'. Learn the ancient crafts of weaving, twining, plaiting, sewing etc...

See Steve for relief from body aches and pains as his East/West massage therapy can be most helpful. Steve also offers surf lessons and board sales and rentals as well as private instruction in 'Traditional Taoist Internal Exercises'.

Pavones

Una Ola Pavones Surf CampColin at Una Ola Surf Camp - 10/8 - The surf was junk early this morning with onshore, stormy conditions, and low tides.  As the tide filled in, the conditions improved, glassy slightly.  However, the surf was minuscule, in the ankle to knee high range.

Caribbean

Salsa Brava

Caribbean surf forecastSurf Forecast.com - 10/15 - 2.5 ft swell from the ENE at 7 seconds producing 1 foot waves. Should stay the same all week.
